 | 01:40 pm - Who Greenlighted This!? We've all seen them. One or two Pokémon that just make us shudder and think, "Who conceptualised this? Who thought this was a good, fun idea!?"
Point out those Pokémon or characters, old and new, that just make you shake your head and laugh. For me, it's:

 | 02:55 pm - everything changes Many of us here are older fans. If you are like me, you were ten years old when the game came out in North America, and were so psyched you couldn't believe it. You played the card game, had some little toys of your favourites, and begged, cajoled and did all but perform as a juggler on the street to get enough money for an all-important Red or Blue cartridge. When you did get it, you went bananas.
As we all get older, times change, and just as Pokémon evolve, so too do the games they are in. I think it's fair to say that the games out now are so radically different from R/B that they're beginning to become something else entirely. Many of the changes are positive. Some are negative, to the point of damaging the experience of the game.
With the obvious point in mind that these series of games are marketed to younger teenagers (10-13) and kids, how do you feel about the changes in Pokémon, as an older gamer or older fan of the series?
Some questions to help foster discussion:
1) What features and changes have you noted that have been positive, even refreshing? 2) What features and changes have you noted that've been duds, or a miss? 3) Are there any features you wish would work a little differently? 4) Are there any things present in the older generations that you wish would reappear? 5) How do you feel about the constant introduction of more Pokémon? 6) Lastly, do you prefer a generation of Pokémon over another? Why? Current Mood: cheerful

 | 11:44 pm - Today I scared some kids How many children have YOU scared?
So my sister is a first-grade teacher. The district usually avoids almost all holiday activity (because somehow it cuts into preparation for more standardized testing), but this year a new principal let them have a small party at the end of the day. So my sister asked me to come in and read from... yes, from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The principal was okay with this, so... late in the class day I came in, just as the kids were finishing up cookies and punch (the combination makes me squirm a bit).
They were pretty noisy at first, so I had to be a bit loud when I started reading. First, The Big Toe. A few shrunk away when I did the "WHEEEERE IS MY TOOOOE" voice, but they were mostly unaffected. The startle at the end made them all jump, and a few were trying to assure the rest that they hadn't jumped. Hehe.
Then, The Haunted House. The kids had no idea what a "preacher" was, so I ended up saying "priest" for the rest of the story, and had to substitute "the haunt" with "the ghost" just to make it less confusing. The kids got very quiet as the story continued. I tried not to be too creepy (when I showed them the picture, a few said "ewwww" but surprisingly none of them really seemed scared by it), but (probably cruelly) I read a few parts with the intention of making them jump a bit.
I made it up to them by following it with The Ghost with the Bloody Fingers. They were worried at first (I used the same voice from the toe story and waved my fingers at them!), but they loved the ending. Everyone does.
Afterward they all thanked me in unison when my sister prompted them, and then class was over. I stayed for a bit and visited with whoever was left. Alarmingly, one girl asked if I had "muscles like Daddy Yankee" because she couldn't tell due to my long sleeves (answer is no, by the way). A boy asked me to come back on Monday and read the rest, and I had to tell him that Halloween would be over by then.
So yes. I read to some first-graders and it was actually a lot of fun. This from someone who usually has no patience for kids. Current Mood: accomplished

I really liked some of the end costume bits this year, especially the one when you click on the poopsmith.
As always, Homsar is triggered by clicking something in the scene with the poopsmith.

 | 04:43 pm - catlessness is overrated Everyone who has a cat knows how frustrating it can be to do crafts in the same house as the cat. The chewed knitting needles, stolen needle threaders, bobbins all through the house, trailing string, bead trays tossed and contents scattered. You can't leave any project unattended for even a minute.
But you can't spell "craft" without c-a-t. Crafts aren't the same if there isn't some little buddy eyeing you and your supplies, or actively engaging in "helping" you.

Any idea on what the costumes are this year? I'm pretty clueless this time, although Strong Bad is obviously another joke. Homsar looks like he's wearing a Devo hat (google it if you're too young to know what that means :P ) Current Location: Home Current Mood: sleepy
